Types of Infertility

Infertility can be classified into two main types, depending on an individual's or couple's reproductive history. Each type has its unique challenges and causes. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for identifying the right approach to treatment.

1. Primary Infertility

Primary infertility refers to the inability of a couple to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse, without any prior history of pregnancy for either partner.

Causes:
  • In Women:
    • Ovulation disorders like PCOS or hypothyroidism.
    • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes due to pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis.
    • Uterine abnormalities such as fibroids or polyps.
    • Poor egg quality or diminished ovarian reserve.
  • In Men:
    • Low sperm count or poor sperm motility.
    • Hormonal imbalances affecting testosterone production.
    • Blockages in the reproductive tract.
    • Genetic conditions, such as Klinefelter syndrome.
Treatment Options:
  • Fertility medications to stimulate ovulation.
  • Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) like IVF or ICSI.
  • Surgical interventions for correcting structural issues.

2. Secondary Infertility

Secondary infertility occurs when a couple has been able to conceive naturally or through assisted methods in the past but is unable to do so again despite trying for at least a year.

Causes:
  • In Women:
    • Age-related decline in fertility.
    • Scarring or complications from previous pregnancies or surgeries.
    • Hormonal disorders or thyroid dysfunction.
    • Lifestyle changes, such as increased stress, weight fluctuations, or poor diet.
  • In Men:
    • Reduced sperm quality or quantity due to age, lifestyle factors, or medical conditions.
    • Erectile dysfunction or other sexual health issues.
    • Complications arising from surgeries or trauma.
Treatment Options:
  • Lifestyle modifications, such as improved diet and stress management.
  • Hormonal therapies to address imbalances.
  • Advanced reproductive techniques, including IUI and IVF.

How is Infertility Diagnosed?

Breaking the Myths and Stigma

Infertility is not a reflection of personal failure. It’s a medical condition that can often be treated successfully. Both men and women can face fertility challenges, and seeking help early is key to improving your chances of conception.
